The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year.
The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest.
I decided we would have an election for a class president.
We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.
To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.
We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.
We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.
The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.
I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support.
I had never seen Olivia's mother.
The day arrived when they were to make their speeches.
Jamie went first.
He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better
Place. He ended by promising to do his very best.
Everyone applauded and he sat down.
Now is was Olivia's turn to speak.
Her speech was concise.
She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream."
She sat down.
The class went wild. "Yes! Yes!
We want ice cream."
She surely would say more. She did not have to.
A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream?
She wasn't sure.
Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it.
She didn't know.
The class really didn't care.
All they were thinking about was ice cream.
Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.
Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and
52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds..
They want ice cream.
The other 48 percent know
They're going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess."
Remember, the government cannot give anything to anyone ---
That they have not first taken away from someone else.

North Dakota's Second Appleseed Shoot
Well, my boys returned home safely from the second Appleseed Shoot held in North Dakota up at the Bartlett's farm. They looked pretty tired, when they got out of the pickup last night, but they didn't complain about doing chores as they knew it was time to get back to work after 6 chores off. Andrew said as he headed out to the barn after supper, "Vacation's over, Jacob." A groan, but no comment.
We did take time to look at the pictures of the shoot yet before bed and we showed the boys the pictures of our outing to the Dagleys. After a quick family prayer time, it was lights out. Feel free to check out Jonathan Bartlett's blog or "My"Andrew's blog (both listed on my sidebar) for more pictures and some intelligent comments.
Being I wasn't there, I can't rightly make any comments about that particular shoot but I thought that I'd share some pictures as I do believe in this project very much. I still plan to write a detailed post about why I believe that every man, woman, and child should know how to properly defend themselves with a firearm. I'll just briefly say here that, if I had not learned how to shoot well when I was 10 years old, I have every reason to believe that the incest would have continued for years yet. I knew how to shoot, and they knew it, and that made all of the difference in the world.
Isn't it terribly sad that an 11 year old girl had to defend herself with a rifle from her own brothers? I think so and thinking this has always motivated me to encourage self defense type thinking and actions and this is why I am 100% in support of the Appleseed Shoot Project. Perhaps these pictures seem gruesome to you, but incest is gruesome too. I wonder if I'd have survived without knowing how to shoot, as it was getting more violent as I aged, and I was protesting more. I thank God, then, for teaching me the skill of holding a rifle in my hand and knowing what to do with it in order to protect myself. THIS IS WHY I AM 100% SUPPORTIVE OF THE APPLESEED SHOOT PROJECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There, now it is out and I feel better.
I spoke with Lynn, Jonathan's mother, a bit about lining up a shoot here and she said that it will be imposable to do one here this fall yet, as it takes up to 3 months notice. I'm sure that absolutely nobody would come here to shoot for 2 days at the end of November. It'll have to wait until next year. We may just go ahead and line up a date so that we can get an instructor then, when the weather in North Dakota is more suited for laying on the ground for 2 days.
Here are some pictures that either Andrew or one of the Bartletts took. In this one, Andrew is checking to see that they have everything that they'll need. My sons were on the end of the line which makes it nice as they're easier to spot in the other pictures. The grass was very wet that morning so Andrew put on his barn boots.

Jonathan, by the way, is standing next to Chris with an orange hat on too. From my understanding, first a person must qualify at the Rifleman level in their shooting. Then, if they choose to proceed on to Shoot Boss, they have to assist the boss in teaching at 4 other shoots. Jonathan said to me at Prarie Days that it would be a blessing to the whole project if North Dakotans could have these 4 shoots. Then he, Chris, and his brother, Peter, would all be qualified for shoot boss and they wouldn't need to bring someone in from out of state. This time the shoot boss, Alex, came from Iowa.
Andrew Bornemann and Andrew Bartlett checking for progress. Everyone made progress, which is what matters!!! My Andrew did qualify, by the end of the shoot, for the "Marksmen" level of recognition with the Appleseed Shoot Project and Jacob got close. The next level higher is called "Sharpshooter" and the highest level is called the "Rifleman." I haven't heard the history lesson from the course, as the boys were too tired to share that last night. However, I do recall reading on the Appleseed site (also listed on my sidebar under self defense) that 200 years ago almost every man in the country could shoot at Rifleman level. How far we have slipped due to our complacency. This picture also shows Alex. The Shot boss wears a red cap and those in training wear orange caps.
The group resting in the shade and hearing the history of our great countries' battle for freedom. This is a picture that stirs my heart to joy for I see that God is calling others to wake up to the direction our freedoms are going in this country. We must shake off the complacency that threatens to choke us and rise up and be men and women of God fully capable of defending ourselves spiritually, mentally, AND physically.
I wish to publicly thank the Bartlett family for opening up their home to us in this way. Their acreage is absolutely beautiful in the Turtle Mountains of North Dakota. Jim, Lynn, Jonathan, Peter, Andrew, and David I thank you all with a warm heart. May God continue to bless and to guide your family.
Please ponder reading up on this fine project. I'm sure we'll let you know when and if we set the date for our very own Appleseed Shoot Project. I'd like to make it available to people around here and I pray that your family will consider doing the same.

PS to Sabbath lessons
I forgot to mention that last night, while Robert and I were out walking, Cora found a movie with very high ratings for boys. We're always looking for such things around here, so we were eager to see it. It's called IRON WILL. Have you ever seen it? WOW--it's based on a true story about a South Dakota (my home state) 17-year-old boy.
This movie shows very clearly the affect that one person with integrity can have on the world. True, Will had perseverance which outlasted them all in the dog-sled race, but what stuck with me the most was his determination to do good even though he was racing to save their family farm when his dad died suddenly. Will not only saved his dog's life, whom he was feuding with, but he saved a fellow racer's life. He also refused to take a bribe AND he refused to give in to fear which is something that I battle with often. The point is made to know how to defend oneself from attack, so that was good too.
The most important point of all, though, came at the end when the love of his family and his dogs gave him the strength to tip his sled back up again and keep going the couple hundred yards to the finish line. The whole race took place over a week's time in the dead of winter from Canada to St. Paul, Minn and some men died in the process. Truly the will to live and succeed gave Will the strength to endure unspeakable hardships. It can do the same for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a wonderful thing it is to be loved! We must not ever underestimate the affect that even a small gesture of love can have on those going through trials. This movie encouraged me to look harder to see ways to bless and strengthen those who are hurting in my life. May it do the same for you as you check it out tonight on U Tube. Maybe tomorrow night?

Update on Dad
I have only a few moments because I should be working, instead of reading blog posts, but I am so draggy today. We got home from the rodeo last night at 1:30. The rodeo ended about 10:00 and then there was a rancher's rodeo which was VERY interesting. These were real farmer/ranchers and they did great. After this was the $10,000 Burlinton/Northern fireworks display and we then visited with the Geigers for about an hour. Miranda was home from Texas so it was hard to tear the 2 girls apart. The one comfort they have is that now they can get back to emailing as Miranda will spend the rest of the summer at her aunt's house where there is Internet access. All in all, it was a wonderful time and the weather was perfect.
I should mention that, on the way up to the rodeo, I read some more of Erling the Bold and on the way home, I finished reading it. We're all kind of lost now that the book is complete and wonder what we could read that would make as much of an impact on our "Self-defense" thinking. I so admire Erling that many times, when he could have killed, he didn't because he respected the life of even his most dastardly enemies. I encourage everyone who is seriously concerned about the state of our country to read ERLING THE BOLD!
I talked to my dad this morning and he sounded much better. He said that they finally decided that there was NOT a stone at all, but just a massive "Sore". I could let that word take me to all kinds of stressful locations, but I won't. I find it hard to believe that my father almost died because of a "Sore" on his liver. He said that they are doing further tests but I'm just going to be thankful that, for now anyway, they have said that there will be no surgery. I'll keep you posted as I hear of further developments.
Well, I should get to work. Our new friend, Bob, brought my garden-size Sonic Bloom kit on Friday night and I have been eager to get the CD playing out in the garden. I have been playing the cassette that came with it to my house plants and I am impressed with how much more alive they look. It's like they're standing at attention--they look so much more "Happy" and that's without the mineral supplement which makes the sounds work even better. I read about this years ago but it was quite a bit more expensive then, so I am excited that the Lord has now brought Sonic Bloom into my life. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get a boom box out to the garden.... 14 hours left to sign up...
Dear friends,
Things are in full swing for the boys to head up to the shoot tomorrow. Jacob and I drove to Wishek this afternoon to pick up the camper which they will take with them. My brother, Duard, and his wife brought dad's camper up from Eureka so we got to visit with them a few minutes. A little over a month ago this would not have been a blessing, but they both have been so good to work with since mom's death! They said that dad was over at their house this morning and he was laughing with them!!!!!!!!! Sharel said that he brought her candy and I dropped my jaw from shock. I've never known my dad to think of other people's needs, let alone desires. Still, Robert said to me recently that he'll know that the leopard has changed his spots when dad calls ME to see how WE are doing. This has never happened in my life so I guess that Robert is right not to get too hopeful that I will have a relationship with my dad some day. Duard is dad's favorite child so it is natural that he would reach out to him. I, unfortunately, was born a girl. ):
Anyway, about the shoot at Chris's place--we went on the Appleseed Shoot website and read this article. Fred certainly is an inspiring writer if not technically "Perfect." PLEASE, if you care about the future of the country our children will inherit, PLEASE READ THIS SHORT ARTICLE. Please be in prayer for the shoot this weekend. We checked and there are still 14 hours left to sign up if anyone is considering going. If that is not possible, PLEASE keep this event in your prayers. Pray for safety of all in attendance and that hearts will wake up to the responsibility which is all of ours to defend that which is good and decent in our country. Well, Cora is playing her half of the piano duet which we are working on for the graduation and I can't resist joining her at the piano for a few minutes of practice time. It's getting so close now that we are starting to make lists of things to do before the big day. When I was in Napoleon, I ordered the boutonniere for Andrew so I can scratch that off of the list and replace it with, "Pick up the bout on Friday, June 5th." I picked a yellow carnation, as he has been in love with yellow all of his life--Lego's didn't help that any. :) She will also add 2 small daisies for each one of his daisy-loving parents--it should be nice. I'M STARTING TO GET SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!

Day 8
I'm half way through!!!!! I'm going to stay on the Master Cleanse 15 days so that makes day 8 the half way point. Today I was a little bit weak around 4:00. I guess it's probably my fault as I just was NOT hungry at all and so I didn't drink as much lemonade as you're supposed to. After I guzzled some down, I felt better.
One thing that I want to share is the need for drinking water immediately after each glassful of lemonade. The first time through I didn't do this and about now in the process my throat was burnt. So this time I've been drinking water each time that I have some lemonade and my throat hasn't hurt at all.
The boys are getting excited to head up for the shoot at Chris's place this weekend. They're working on the Coleman lantern right now. If anyone would like to ride with them, let us know. There's still time to decide to learn how to defend our country, if necessary, in the future. The shoot isn't full yet so PLEASE prayerfully consider joining the men and boys as they sharpen their understanding of how and why we need to prepare. Years ago our friend, Tim Keyes, gave us this lantern but we've never gotten a chance to use it. Whey you milk cows, you don't go many place overnight. The boys are thinking it will be sooo cool to go to a place without electricity for 2 days. We'll see what they think of it afterwards. :) Anyway, here they are getting the lantern ready to go. Thanks Tim for your generosity. Oh yes, I should add that they learned how to light it safely by Goggling, "How to light a Coleman lantern." Is there anything Mr. Goggle doesn't know? :)

Appleseed Project coming up soon
Now I realize that most of you readers are ladies, but I think this is very important. We ladies helped to shape our great nation throughout our history and there's no reason to stop now.
In less than 2 weeks our friend, Christopher Scigliano, is hosting a rifle training school at his farm. The dates are May 30th and 31st. The purpose of this school is to help us prepare for what may be coming into our futures, whether we like it or not. Our boys are planning to attend and we would encourage you ladies to send your husbands and sons too. I'm copying a little information from their website but please feel free to go there yourselves. The cost is minimal and the education top-notch.
Please be in prayer for this event even if you or your menfolk are unable to attend. So many times we want to stick our heads in the sand and act as if the UN isn't trying to take over our country. This is commonly called denial. Let's all take this opportunity to learn what we can do so that we can defend our families; our communities, and our country if that need arises.
If anyone from our area feels led to go, please let us know as you can carpool with the boys.

What the RWVA (Revolutionary War Veterans Association) is all about:
The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away — no ifs, ands or buts about it. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile;" a rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particulary evident in the birth of our country, and was the difference in winning the Revolutionary War.
So why me?This country was founded and won by riflemen who fought and beat British forces. We invite all interested marksmen to learn the skills and techniques necessary to shoot proficiently; and then hope you'll participate in teaching and practicing with others so that together we can save this great land. Why you? Well, that's simple: if you're on this page we're betting you're a patriot, and we hope you answer the call.
What's a rifleman?In short, a rifleman is an armed American, trained in the tradition of American Liberty. It's a man who has learned to shoot a rifle accurately — accurate enough to score "expert" on the Army Qualification Course. Until you can do that, you're considered a "Cook," unprepared and unqualified to carry a rifle on the firing line of freedom. But after attending an Appleseed AQT shoot, you'll have the credentials necessary to be a true rifleman, and will understand the critical need for defending freedom in this country.
The RWVA is dedicated to the Appleseed Program and encourages every American to learn to shoot

Protect ourselves
Dear friends,
I just read this on a blog and thought I would post it for your consideration. The young man who is hosting this event at his farm near Leeds, Christopher Scigliano, is a friend of our family. Almost everyone is aware of the troubles in our land these days, but nobody is sure of what to do about them. The Appleseed Program is designed to take you from being a simple rifle owner to being a true rifleman. All throughout American history, the rifleman has been defined as a marksman capable of hitting a man-sized target from 500 yards away — no ifs, ands or buts. This 500-yard range is traditionally known as "the rifleman's quarter-mile." A rifleman can hit just about any target he can see. This skill was particulary evident in the birth of our country, and made the difference in winning the Revolutionary War. You'll hear the story that every American should hear; about how your forebears took up arms, on the first day of the American Revolution, and did things no other people in the world have ever done. You'll learn things you don't learn in school about that day. About where the Revolution really started — it didn't start in Lexington, nor did it start in Concord. According to Sam Adams, it was over before it started. Be there to hear The Story; because to hear it is to remember what they did that day, and to remember is to honor them for doing it. I read once about Sweden outlawing guns. Within a year there was utter chaos as the criminals all had their guns while the law-abiding citizens were defenseless. THIS MUST NOT HAPPEN HERE! It's only in being prepared in ALL ways, including spiritually, that we can hope to defend ourselves against the threat of the United Nations taking over our country and taking away our freedoms.
Please prayerfully read this information and send it to whomever the Lord leads you to share it with. I think that Andrew will probably be allowed to go but the rest of us will be needed here at home. Let's all prayerfully consider our preparations for the future.

I just read this on a blog and thought I would post it for your consideration. The young man who is hosting this event at his farm near Leeds, Christopher Scigliano, is a friend of our family. Almost everyone is aware of the troubles in our land these days, but nobody is sure of what to do about them.
